AMD Announces Istanbul; Offers New Server Roadmap

To mark the sixth birthday of its first processor of Opteron, AMD today officially announced its new processor of waiter, called Istanbul. AMD indicates that it will be the first such a processor with the two six cores and a directly bound architecture; and be available for 2,4, or 8 systems of casing. This would enable you to put to 48 cores of processor in a system, which is the first system x86 about which I dense the 'VE intended to speak.

AMD indicates that the product will produce 30 percent of execution moreover than to exist Changha processor of quadruple-core to the same power supply. One expects that the product in support of HyperTransport 3.0 with a configuration called , assistance of HT and is in the systems in June.

But I right as was interested in where AMD 'line of waiter of S goes from here. (Click on top the image to see a greater image of the roadmaps.) AMD was formed while making it possible its new pieces to function in old platforms, and Istanbul continues to make thus. But with the next generation, due in 2010, it will require new casings and new platforms, because of the change so that AMD calls the directly bound architecture 2.0, which will support a controller of memory integrated 4 by channels (against 2 a channel one in the current products) and up to 4 bonds of HyperTransport (against 3 in the current products). It will be available with to 12 cores in a design which the company calls Magny-Course. Compagnie says that it will be the greatest jump in the execution in any generation of Operton; and known as that Magny-Course takes now, and is envisaged to be in the systems in first quarter of 2010.

In the new family, the line of Opteron will include two new series now: The 6000 series are conceived for 2 or 4 systems of casing, with up to 12 DIMMS per casing. The 6000 starts with the platform of Maranello, starting with the processor of Magny-Course with to 12 cores on a process 45nm. That will be followed in 2011 Interlagos with 12-16 cores on a process 32nm. Interlagos is based on next microarchitecture, called Bulldozer.

The 4000 series are conceived for 1 or 2 systems of casing, with up to 4 DIMMs by casing. This will form part at the beginning of of San Marino of platform, at the origin with a processor 45nm with 4 to 6 cores called Lisbon. It will include the special parts designed to be more ideal efficiency.

This follow-up another new piece of waiter, one announced today, Opteron EE, a processor of 40 Watts, designed for the very dense environments of center of data processing.
